For Turf Less Can Be More

Says Cornell Study

Cornell University, under the direction of Prof. Frank Rossi, has completed two years of study using products to be produced by Converted Organics Inc. What Dr. Rossi found was that using these products allows professional turf managers to reduce chemical inputs by half or more without jeopardizing championship results. The studies evaluated both turf grass quality and effectiveness in suppressing common diseases such as dollar spot, brown patch and anthracnose.

Converted Organics Inc. will be producing all natural soil amendment products using a patented microbial digestion process. The feedstock is food waste and contains no bio solids or manures. The process produces both a dry crumbled product (greens grade available) and a liquid concentrate that can be used in irrigation systems as well as sprayers. The baseline products are rich in micronutrients and in a number of studies have demonstrated effectiveness is suppressing a variety of root and leaf borne diseases. The Company will also offer a dry product supplemented with feather meal to boost its nutritional content.

The Cornell study was first conducted in the summer of 2005 and was designed to see if there was an interactive effect between the standard turf management regime and our dry and liquid products. In other words, is performance enhanced. In both years there was a consistent interaction indicating that application rates for the turf standard (ammonium nitrate, phosphate, potassium sulfate and iron) could be reduced by 50% or more.

But Dr. Rossi noted something else that was very interesting – the plots treated with the Genica products showed less disease. In the follow-up trial conducted in 2006, the scope of the study was expanded to include disease suppression. The results confirmed what had been casually observed the prior year. Using the Genica LC 200 in combination with Chlorothalonil provided effective control of dollar spot, brown patch and anthracnose even when the application rate of Chlorothalonil was reduced by 50% - 75%. It is worth noting that the summer of 2006 was an especially wet and hot season that posed significant challenges for turf managers in the region.

For ease of use and convenience, the dry product will be available in several formulations and container sizes. The liquid will be available in one ton totes for use in fertigation systems or in 2.5 gallon containers for use in sprayers. The liquid is a concentrate and should be diluted 50:1 for most foliar applications.
